Home security FAQs

I was told I could get a home security system for free. What’s the catch?
The catch is that although some home security companies tell you they will give you a free security system, what this actually means is that they will give you a couple of door sensors and a motion detector as long as you sign a 3-year contract with a monitoring company. The security company and the monitoring company work together to market and promote one another. Although it is true that you are probably getting several hundreds of dollars of equipment without directly paying for it, the fact is that you are paying between $25 and $50 per month to have the system monitored. This can add up to a lot of money over three years.
What is the advantage of getting a wireless security system?
The main advantage associated with this is the fact that you will not need to have the installer drilling holes in all different areas of your home. Instead, all of the sensors and detectors will be put into place thanks to an adhesive on the back of the devices. This also means that the security system will not use a lot of electricity, since the sensors and detectors are all battery-powered. By and large, a wireless security system is considered to be a cleaner as well as a more maintenance-free system.

Should I get a lot of sensors or a few detectors in my home?
Whereas a sensor can only protect one door or one window at a time, a motion detector is able to cover much wider areas with just one piece of equipment. Many people prefer using a motion detector or two to cover all their doors and windows, but this is not true of all people. Many people hesitate to install a motion detector in an area where there might be traffic that goes through there fairly often. In order to avoid an accidental alarm because of the foot traffic, there are some people who will simply choose to use door and window sensors on as many doors and windows as they can instead.
